Experiential Language Instruction That Works
Research proves that when it comes to successful language acquisition, study and memorization of course material doesn’t work. The effectiveness of ESL courses is dependent on how the content is presented and subsequent opportunities that learners are given to apply what they have studied. BlueHorizion ESL is a full-featured ESL offering to help students gain access to higher education – and succeed in their academic endeavors. From early-level, to degree preparation and immersion programs, BlueHorizon ESL provides specific teaching methods proven to result in successful learning.
Engaging Teaching Methods Make a Difference
With its residential immersion program, BlueHorizon ESL uses an active-learning approach that unites curriculum with engaging teaching methods. Designed for graduate and undergraduate students who have not yet reached the level of English proficiency required for regular academic admission, BlueHorizon ESL Immersion is a year-long English language program offered on the campus of Urbana University (Ohio). It consists of a six-week intensive language and cultural orientation course followed by nine months of full-time study of English for academic purposes. Participants reside on campus along with native speakers, taking advantage of both the intensive learning format and the reinforcement afforded by the campus living and learning environment.
An alternative to the immersion program is a three-week, residential program that is customized to meet the specific needs of your group. Individuals interested in developing a BlueHorizon ESL residential program work with a coordinator to identify needs and establish a support plan. All experiences include beginner, intermediate or advanced level language instruction, taught by TESOL-trained professionals with advanced degrees.
Engaging Teaching Methods Make a Difference
BlueHorizon ESL training and curriculum is built on more than two decades of preparing thousands of students around the world for success. When Al Baha University in Saudi Arabia was looking for a partner to help develop new degree programs, as well as enhance some of its existing offerings, Franklin University was a natural choice.
Despite being separated by several continents, Franklin and Al Baha share a commitment to providing access to education, and the belief that the development of high-quality academic programs aren’t limited by geography or tight timelines.
In December 2014, Al Baha signed a contract to develop 40 online courses in support of five new healthcare programs: Clinical Nutrition, Emergency Medical Services, Health Information Technology, Hearing and Speech, and Medical Laboratory Sciences. Several courses were also created as enhancements to Al Baha’s existing bachelor’s degree in English and a Doctor of Pharmacy program.
With a broad range of expertise, more than 50 individuals made up the project teams that contributed to the evaluation of existing offerings and the creation of new programming.
Working from the required course topics, the teams developed learning outcomes, course descriptions, syllabi, weekly course content and assignments. The scope of the project was vast and encompassed all aspects of the teaching and learning experience from choosing the most pedagogically effective ways to present the material – including interactive games and virtual labs – to selecting the best textbooks.
Team members were U.S. based for the duration of the project and teams met monthly using online video conferencing to provide status updates and progress checks.
Benefits to the Client
All 40 online courses were completed and delivered to Al Baha University, by July 2015. The six-month timeline is one-third of the industry expectation for a project of this magnitude. As a result, Al Baha’s partnership with Franklin enabled the University to build its online course offerings more quickly and effectively than otherwise possible.
In addition to delivering the new courses, the team also created 150 syllabi for Al Baha’s existing onsite courses. The syllabi describe each course and its expected outcomes. The standardized outlines are useful for faculty and staff to communicate academic offerings to current and prospective students, as well as external reviewers.
The project involved creating learning outcomes, course descriptions, syllabi, weekly course content, assignments and dynamic learning experiences – including interactive games and virtual labs.
Al Baha partnered with Franklin University to create 40 online courses. Al Baha was in search of a partner that could develop high-quality academic programs quickly. The university specified the desired degree areas and required courses, but needed expertise to develop the curriculum and teaching materials necessary to support the programs.
The courses were developed and delivered to Al Baha within six months. The industry average for a project of this scope is 14-18 months. The courses enabled Al Baha to launch five new healthcare programs and enhance its existing English major and Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
About the Client
Saudi Arabia’s Al Baha University enrolls 14,000 students and offers a variety of majors emphasizing public service. Established in 2006, the public university provides modern curricula and up-to-date teaching technologies throughout its four colleges and 23 academic departments.
The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College (SCOJC) was established to provide educational programs for judges, magistrates and non-judicial court personnel throughout the state.
The Ohio Revised Code stipulates specific training requirements for the state’s probation officers within their first year of employment. While these courses are designed for recently hired probation officers, they are open and beneficial to all officers.
The program curriculum was developed by a committee of personnel from Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), SCOJC, and the Ohio Chief Probation Officers Association (OCPOA), including chief probation officers from urban and rural common pleas, municipal and county courts. It consists of six face-to-face and 12 online courses.
The SCOJC was in need of a strong partner to translate the instructor-led curriculum into an effective, self-paced, online training program.
The initial contract with SCOJC was to design and build a set of three courses on the Ohio court system, the criminal justice system and the authority of probation officers.
Using the established curriculum and pre-defined outcomes, the new courses were built inside the client’s existing learning management system. The Franklin University Learning Solutions designers used Articulate Storyline, an industry standard software, to create engaging learner experiences – including video and simulations.
Weekly status meetings with the design team and the project manager, kept the SCOJC updated on progress toward the goal. The initial three courses were delivered within a five-month period, which was in line with client expectations.
Benefits to the Client
The continuous availability of online, self-paced courses enables convenient, cost-effective training for the SOCJC and probation officers. Not only are more officers able to be served, more officers are in-compliance with training requirements at any given time.
To date, about 1,200 probation officers have completed the online courses. Over the past 2.5 years, Franklin University has completed eight additional courses for the SOCJC and continues an ongoing relationship to identify emerging needs.
Because the SCOJC is responsible for training statewide, online courses provide access to standardized, cost-effective training. As a result of required continuing education requirements, the SCOJC needed three new courses for its existing probation officer online training program.
The SCOJC partnered with Franklin University to design and build three online, self-paced courses using previously defined curriculum and outcomes.
More than 400 officers were served by online courses in year one and nearly 800 were served in year two. The SCOJC continues to partner with Franklin as its training needs evolve. To date, the University has collaborated to create 11 courses.
About the Client
The Supreme Court of Ohio Judicial College (SCOJC) provides educational programs and activities for judges, magistrates and non-judicial court personnel throughout the state.
The declining popularity of COBOL, a computer programming language, created a training issue for programmers within the Information Technology Department at Nationwide. The language, once primarily used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments, was being replaced with Java, a modern, general purpose language. The phase out of COBOL at Nationwide required programmers to learn Java in order to maintain their current positions and/or advance within the organization.
Nationwide requested a series of courses to provide the current COBOL programmers foundational knowledge of Java that could be completed in less than two years. Nationwide could provide a minimum of eight to 10 individuals to run each course. Employees who complete the program would not only obtain the qualifications for the newly re-defined programmer positions, but would also be well-suited to advance at Nationwide.
As part of the partnership with Nationwide, Franklin University developed a series of four courses that would equip the programmers with the Java knowledge necessary to achieve business and performance goals. Within one month of the original request from Nationwide, the first course was offered. The four courses are:
- Introduction to Computer Science and Object-Oriented Programming
- Object-Oriented Data Structures and Algorithms I
- Database Management Systems
- Application Server Programming
A Franklin faculty member simultaneously instructs employees onsite at Nationwide’s main location, as well as those at satellite locations through hybrid sessions using AdobeConnect. Session times are tailored to coincide with the end of a typical workday. Each Fall and Winter term, the first two courses are offered with the third and fourth courses offered on an as-needed basis.
As part of the partnership, Nationwide’s programmers participating in the Java training are classified as non-degree seeking students at Franklin University, but because they are earning college credit – in addition to satisfying their immediate training needs – they have the option to continue taking courses to meet long-term education goals as well.
Benefits to the Client
The first course was offered in August 2014 and the first cohort of programmers is on track to complete the last of the four courses in May 2016. While participants are only required to take the first two courses to retain the programmer positions, 11 (of the initial cohort of 14) individuals will receive certificates of completion for the four-course series in May.
To date, about 80 employees have taken at least one class and one-third of the initial cohort has already transitioned to new positions that focus on Java programming. Several other individuals also advanced to new positions after completing the first two courses.
The phase out of COBOL and introduction of Java required the re-training of existing programmers at Nationwide in order for individuals to retain their current positions and/or advance within the company.
Nationwide Information Technology partnered with Franklin University to offer a series of four courses to serve employees onsite at several locations that would enable programmers to obtain working knowledge of Java within two years.
The initial course was deployed within one month of engagement with Nationwide. While participants are not required to complete every course, 11 individuals will receive a certificate of completion for the four-course series in May 2016. To date, more than 80 employees have taken at least one of the four courses.
